Talking About Festivals and Historical Sites
Exploring festivals and historical sites is one of the most enjoyable ways to understand a country’s culture. These experiences connect us to the past, help us appreciate diverse traditions, and improve our communication and speaking skills in English.
What Is Culture?
Culture refers to the customs, beliefs, art, language, and behavior that define a group of people. It shapes our identity and gives us a sense of belonging. Every nation expresses its culture through traditions, celebrations, and heritage.
The Concept of Cultural Heritage
Cultural heritage includes both tangible and intangible elements passed down from previous generations. Ancient mosques, madrasahs, and monuments represent physical heritage, while songs, folklore, and rituals are examples of intangible culture.
Festivals Around the World
Festivals are joyful events that bring people together to celebrate shared values and beliefs. They can be religious, cultural, or community-based. Common activities include parades, traditional music, dancing, special foods, and decorations. Through these celebrations, people express gratitude, joy, and unity.
Examples of Famous Festivals
- Religious Festivals: Christmas, Eid al-Fitr, Diwali
- Cultural Festivals: Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving, Holi
- Community Festivals: Harvest festivals, Independence Days
Historical Sites and Their Importance
Historical sites tell the story of human civilization. They include ancient cities, monuments, temples, and castles. Visiting such sites helps us understand how people lived in the past and how societies have evolved over time.
Many historical sites are protected by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites because they represent outstanding cultural or natural value. For example, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Venice in Italy, and the Statue of Liberty in the USA are considered global treasures.
Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage
In Uzbekistan, cultural heritage is preserved through a national system of protection and registration. Important landmarks such as Registan Square in Samarkand, ancient mosques, madrasahs, and caravanserais are registered as protected sites. These places cannot be modified or restored without official permission, ensuring that our history remains alive for future generations.
Learning Through Culture
Talking about festivals and historical sites in English helps students improve their speaking skills while learning about different cultures. It develops vocabulary related to celebrations, history, and travel — essential for real-life communication.
Conclusion
Understanding festivals and historical sites allows us to connect the past and the present. They remind us that culture is not only about history but also about how people live, celebrate, and express their identity today. By learning and sharing about cultural traditions, we build respect, curiosity, and unity among nations.

It’s all too unusual for archeology to make the news but the other day there was a news item about an (1) excavation/exhumation not far from where I live. An archeologist proudly announced that he and his team had found the (2) leftovers/remains of a group of Bronze Age roundhouses. In fact, all they had (3) displayed/unearthed of the buildings themselves were post-holes, but they were clearly chuffed by the discovery. They had also found a large number of (4) ruins/artefacts, and by carbon dating some substance from inside a pot they were able to (5 ) date/time the site to around 2000 (6) Be/AD. Although peeple tend to think of prehistoric man as (7) illiterate/primitive, the archeologist explained that they were more sophisticated than we many imagine, capable of creating the most elaborate metalwork, both (8) ornaments/embroidery and weapons. And Neolithic man was clever enough to (9) demolish/construct structures such as S-tonehenge, which still (10) draws/pulls over 800,000 visitors each year. The (11) finds/findings will be (12) exposed/exhibited in my local museum and I’ll definitely go to see them.

Protecting our heritage
In the UK, our heritage is protected with the help of the system of listing buildings. A listed building is one that is considered to have historical significance. It cannot be altered or demolished without permission from the local planning authority. As well as houses, other structures can also be protected, such as bridges and even bunkers.

UNESCO helps protect the world’s natural and cultural heritage by designating places as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Such a designation means that the site is considered of great importance to the common heritage of mankind. The sites can sometimes receive funding. Examples of World Heritage Sites are the Pyramids of Giza, Venice and the Statue of Liberty.

Do you have a similar system in your country?
=== Taqdimot 23 ===
Example:
In Uzbekistan, our cultural heritage is protected through a system of historical and architectural site registration. A registered site is one that holds cultural, historical, or architectural importance and cannot be modified, restored, or demolished without approval from the Ministry of Culture. Along with historical buildings, other culturally significant structures can also be protected, including mosques, madrasahs, ancient city walls, and caravanserais. For example, the “Registan Square” in Samarkand is a protected site and cannot undergo changes without proper authorization.
