How does the British educational system compare to the American system?
=== Taqdimot 3 ===
Throughout the United Kingdom, children begin their formal education by the age of 4, many by the age of 3 years. There is a British national curriculum that begins with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework that provides parents and educators a holistic framework of milestones and benchmarks where children are developmentally. While it is play-based, it also begins formalized schooling and has an academic component. The EYFS emphasizes that each child will develop in their own time, but that this is where the majority of children are at each stage of their development. The EYFS is set up in age and stage bands that purposefully overlap, and center on developing all aspects of a young child, both socially and academically.

Typically, in the United States children may attend preschool, but generally this is part-time unless both parents work. Formal schooling is not compulsory until children are 6 years of age. In 2013 New York City decided, and put into law, that any child who is turning 4 in that calendar year is able to attend public (or state run) preschool and that kindergarten is mandatory, however throughout the rest of New York State and the United States this not normally available to all children. While not compulsory until age 6, preschool and kindergarten in New York City are highly encouraged and NYC promises to find a seat for every 4 year old, although it may not be in your neighborhood school. Kindergarten is seen as a right in New York City. Preschools and kindergartens are still offered part-time and tend to be predominantly based on socialization skills.

How does the British educational system compare to the American system?
UK education system vs US – Elementary school
=== Taqdimot 6 ===
As children get older and move into elementary school the two systems are very similar in that the teachers offer a broad range of subjects and there are measures put in place to ensure that adequate yearly progress is being made. In the US, many of these measures were put in place with No Child Left Behind and remain in place today. Schools and states use this information to best help shape the educational system and to ensure that all learners are provided with a good educational foundation. In the UK there is end of Key Stage benchmarking where the entire country is tested and reported on, and similar to the US, this information is used to help shape the educational system, except that it is national and externally benchmarked.
=== Taqdimot 7 ===
In general, the US offers a holistic liberal arts approach to education from kindergarten all the way through graduation. In the British educational system there is a broad liberal arts approach and, as learners get older, it becomes increasingly specialized. The US curriculum tends to have a national focus while the British curriculum tends to have a broader view. The US often relies heavily on text books while the British curriculum uses a variety of sources and authentic texts.
=== Taqdimot 8 ===
The US tends to offer more choices in sports and other extracurricular activities, including clubs. In British schools there are also extracurricular activities and sports, but with a more selective offering available.
=== Taqdimot 9 ===
One of the other key differences between the British and American school systems is the school calendar. Most US schools have federal holidays off here and there but the bigger school breaks tend to be in December, one in the spring time around March or April, and then a long summer break. In the UK schools go for approximately 6 – 8 weeks and then have a week off, a slightly longer break in December and spring and a shorter summer break than their US counterparts. The number of actual school days is approximately the same, just a difference in how the breaks are distributed throughout the year.
=== Taqdimot 10 ===
Teachers in the US are certified and have a credential for the state in which they teach with some reciprocity in other states, in the UK teachers receive their Qualified Teacher Status and are able to teach anywhere within the UK or in British schools international.

British high school curriculum vs American curriculum
When students get into the upper grades in both US and British schools there are other differences between the two educational systems. In most cases, the US students continue on with a broad, liberal arts education with some choices that are of particular interest to the learner, but not a concentration in a specific area. In British education learners pick areas they want to concentrate on with the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) if outside of the United Kingdom. With the GCSE and IGCSE learners choose their subjects and study them for two years.
=== Taqdimot 12 ===
They then take an exam and receive a certificate and have now completed their compulsory education. Some will then go into university while many others will stay in school for another two years and either do the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme (DP) or A Levels and then go off to university. During these years in the US math and science are usually taught as independent and sequential subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, etc. and Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc. while in a British education system they are taught simultaneously. In the US learners’ grades are cumulated together to form a grade point average, GPA, while in British schools the learners receive their marks for completion of the GCSE or IGCSE and if they remain in school for the DP or A Levels.
=== Taqdimot 13 ===
Colleges and Universities in the US accept students based on their transcripts, teacher recommendations, extra-curricular activities, and how the learner might contribute to the school community and UK universities will offer provisional placements based on predicted scores.
Based on national average statistics, most children educated in a British style are a year or more ahead of their US counterparts in math and language. The philosophy in Britain is to ensure that each learner does as well as they can and is challenged to progress at a rate over and above the rate an average learner would make in an average school.
=== Taqdimot 14 ===
While there are key differences between the British and American curriculums and educational systems, both offer a high quality education for your child and will assist your child in developing their interests and talents not only for university but also for life.

The schools in the UK vs US
Students in the US almost always attend three different schools: elementary, middle and high school. In the UK, a lot of students only attend two schools: primary and secondary. Between the ages of 16 and 18, students in the UK can choose whether to continue in their secondary school or go to a sixth-form college for the final two years.
Age
School attendance is compulsory in the UK for children aged between 5 and 16. In the US, education is compulsory from 6 to 18. This is actually more in line with most European nations.
=== Taqdimot 16 ===
Years and grades
In the UK, each year in school is denoted by a number. Reception is for children aged 4 – 5 and then students progress from year 1 to 13 if they choose to stay at school until they are 18. In the US, the years are counted in grades. A child who is 6 – 7 is in the first grade and the final year of high school is twelfth grade. In US high schools the years are called freshman, sophomore, junior and senior for grades 9 to 12. Just to make it more confusing, the years and grades don’t match up: students aged 14 would be in year 9 in the UK but eighth grade in the US.
=== Taqdimot 17 ===
Uniforms
A big yes in the UK. All schools have uniforms and each school’s uniform is different. This is to help students of a school feel a sense of unity and to promote inclusion. It also looks really, really sweet on the teeny tiny 4 and 5-year-olds. Uniforms are not a thing in the US, aside from in some private schools. Students can generally wear whatever they want to school, though there have been debates in recent years over clothing considered inappropriate for lessons.
=== Taqdimot 18 ===
Sports
Students in the UK attend P.E. classes, while their American counterparts head to gym class. There is a big focus on high school sport in the US (this might come as a surprise given the statistics on obesity over there). In the US, the most popular sports are American football, basketball and track and field. In the UK, students tend to play football and rugby.
=== Taqdimot 19 ===
School meals
Despite the terrible reputation of British food, school meals in the UK are pretty good. In the past fifteen years, a huge campaign has made sure that food served at school is fresh and healthy. The campaign doesn’t seem to have reached the US yet, where school lunches are unhealthy and not very tasty by most accounts. School students in the UK are also forbidden from drinking sugary drinks and only water and fruit juice are available – again, not the case in the US.
=== Taqdimot 20 ===
Homework and Grades
Because the US system emphasizes breadth, courses require weekly or even biweekly readings as well as other assignments such as small writing projects, major research papers, and oral presentations throughout the course. In the UK, most schools are much more lecture-based, with only occasional assignments throughout the semester. In some cases, there may be no actual required assignments and instead your entire grade may be based on one final exam. In the US, your grade will be based on your performance on the variety of assignments, with a final exam making up only a percentage of your total grade.
=== Taqdimot 21 ===
Cost
The cost of education in both countries is far from cheap, but in the United States it is generally higher. According to a law passed in 2012, universities in England may charge up to £9000 (approximately $14,300) per year. Of course, this applies only to citizens of the UK and the EU, not international students. Fees for international students can be significantly higher. The government sets the limits for tuition fees, and each individual school sets its own fee up to that limit.
=== Taqdimot 22 ===
By contrast, the government has very little control over what universities charge in the United States. The US differentiates between in-state tuition fees and out-of-state tuition fees, as well as between private and public universities. These distinctions determine the tuition fee. The average tuition fee for public two-year institutions is around $3000 per year, while the average fee for private four-year institutions is around $29,000 per year.
=== Taqdimot 23 ===
Finally, some private four-year institutions can cost up to $50,000 per year. In order to help students cover the cost of tuition in both countries, loans are available through the government with favorable terms and interest rates.
